The column was excellent with lots of reports and games. It was also come along a Draught column, located just beside the chess column.

The area runs a telegraphic match between Oomaru and Invercargill, this game declared as win for white, although today's engine may suggest it still lots of play for both side. The notation contained errors in the final moves.

Bird v Heywood. A match of nine games was lately played at Newcastle between Messrs Bird and Heywood. Three games were played on even terms (the result=Bird 2, Heywood 1), Bird gave his opponent pawn and move in three games (result=Bird 1, Heywood 1, drawn 1), and pawn and two moves in three games (Bird 0, Heywood 2, drawn 1). the ninth game however, was never played; for after the eight game Mr Bird remarked that Mr Heywood, after showing such accurate play as he had done in the latter stages of the contest, barring a big blunder, would win the remaining game or draw it. Consequently he preferred to resign the game and the match. The final score was therefore Heywood 4, Bird 3, drawn 2."

This is interesting rare game by Henry Edward Bird. This was his unsuccessful match against Newcastle strong player, only known as Mr. Heywood. Evening Express did not report the detail, but as far as Otago Witness from New Zealand reported:

"Bird v Heywood. A match of nine games was lately played at Newcastle between Messrs Bird and Heywood. The game shown that mr. Heywood indeed a capable player, handling the Hungarian defence accurately against Bird. The error in printing is in move 40.K to K , should be K to Kt. Game can be view in game viewer below.

One more known game by Miss Mary Rudge, Woman Champion from Bristol. This is a correspondence game against one of strong amateur player in the area. T. Letchford was mostly related to correspondence game in Wales, his name can be found several times in British Chess Magazine. The game in the article however was in question for its final result of draw, because if my reading correct, the last move 26.P to QR4 was rather dubious and black already got the upper hand without this questionable move. King's Gambit Accepted: Muzio Gambit, 1-0 Hanover 1927 (?)

Very interesting recorded consultation game played in Hanover congress, probably the same year as the chess column issued (1927). Although type as F. Samisch, I think it was Friedrich Saemisch and it was Frantisek Schubert in the black camp. The game was pretty amazing, a Muzio Gambit played in consultation mode and involved several sacrifices. Unfortunately the end was pretty blunderous as well. See in the game viewer below:

Problem:
White to play and mate in two moves. Composed by Pieter. ten Cate, first prize in the Second International Two-move Tourney of the "Grantham Journal". Interestingly the column challenge the reader to question how the position can arise from legal moves. A book was offered as a prize for whom can give the legal moves leading to the chess problem by Pieter ten Cate.

This game was collected from mr. Reichhelm's manuscript, according to the column it has about sixty in collection. Unfortunately while trying reconstructing the game I found error at move B to QR4 and Kt to QR4 for black, as the QR4 square already occupied. Or maybe I miss something there... The game was known and this is similar game  to Steinitz vs Rock 1863, so since 1891 the game was known played by Morphy.
