Mr. W.Steinitz is conducting a chess column in the New York Tribunes. It is needless to say that it will be edited with very great ability. He played on Saturday, October 18 at the Manhattan Chess Club 26 simultaneous chess games , winning 28 drawing 2 and losing 1.

Judge Golmayo the noted Cuban expert, has accepted the office of referee in the cable match -Steinitz vs Tachigorin.

Mr. Shipley informs us that the first round of the match between the Franklin (Philadelphia) C.C. and the Manhattan C.C. will take place about November 20.

Reports:
- Whilst lately visiting the headquarters of chess in London, Simpson's Divan in the Strand, we missed some old habitu'es and noticed some fresh recruits. The most notable absentee was Bird, the veteran player, who was lying on a sich bed, but is since, we are pleased to say, much better. Blackburn was also absent being on a chess tour in Scotland. Van Vliet, the genial chess editor of the Hereford Times was there deep in the mystery of an intricate hcess combination and apparently oblivious of all around him. Lee was also present and playing that game of dominoes called Matador, which seems to be a favourite game amonst freequenters of the Divan.

The mention of Simpson's Divan reminds us of an amusing story whic is told of it. A cretain well-known habitue was well known to have an aversion to having a money stake on his game, much to the disgust of the many professionals who frequent the rooms. During a game which he was playing with one of the masters, a bystander was making himself objectionable by remarking audibly on the progress of the game, and at last finished up by saying, "I am glad to see you object to the filthy lucre, Mr....." To which Mr....., whose patience was now quite exhausted, replied, "it is not the filthy lucre I object to, but the filthy looker-on." Collapse of bystander.

This game was prized "Best and Most Brilliant" by Isidor Gunsberg himself in the Sunday Daily Telegraph. The white side launched bishop sacrifice theme to the kingside. With modern engine, we can see that White is only a pawn up with all black's best defence, but this is the Romantic Chess era, and the Black side accepted the sacrifice with Romantic spirit. Both players were unknown and do not have any more details.

Well known game, it was published in El Pablo Morphy (15th December) from New York Chess Monthly. Morphy gave a rook and a knight to an amateur. According to information at chessgames.com the Amateur was name "Theodore Knight".

Bird v Heywood. A match of nine games was lately played at Newcastle between Messrs Bird and Heywood. Three games were played on even terms (the result=Bird 2, Heywood 1), Bird gave his opponent pawn and move in three games (result=Bird 1, Heywood 1, drawn 1), and pawn and two moves in three games (Bird 0, Heywood 2, drawn 1). the ninth game however, was never played; for after the eight game Mr Bird remarked that Mr Heywood, after showing such accurate play as he had done in the latter stages of the contest, barring a big blunder, would win the remaining game or draw it. Consequently he preferred to resign the game and the match. The final score was therefore Heywood 4, Bird 3, drawn 2."

- Lipschutz is getting ready for a fight with Lasker.

This game was collected from mr. Reichhelm's manuscript, according to the column it has about sixty in collection. Unfortunately while trying reconstructing the game I found error at move B to QR4 and Kt to QR4 for black, as the QR4 square already occupied. Or maybe I miss something there... The game was known and this is similar game  to Steinitz vs Rock 1863, so since 1891 the game was known played by Morphy.

Anecdote:
Fred Intropidi, the distinguished musician, and a member of the Manhattan Chess Club, among pleasing "Recollections of Distinguished Chess-players" in the St. John Globe, relates the following exquisite little anecdote about the late captain Mackenzie's simultaneous play: "If the Captain castles, I am gone. I will give him a delicate hint." The gentleman then placed a good cigar on the board, between the rook and the king. The captain accepted the hint, but in a different manner. He studied the position carefully, then took the cigar from the board, lit it - said "thank you," and - Castled - my friend was defeated.
