Saemisch in Consultation Games 1927 - The Sunday Times Perth

Chess and Draught was a chess column from Western Australian, The Sunday Times Perth newspaper. A draughts column was added as 'co-column'.

King's Gambit Accepted: Muzio Gambit, 1-0 Hanover 1927 (?)

Very interesting recorded consultation game played in Hanover congress, probably the same year as the chess column issued (1927). Although type as F. Samisch, I think it was Friedrich Saemisch and it was Frantisek Schubert in the black camp. The game was pretty amazing, a Muzio Gambit played in consultation mode and involved several sacrifices. Unfortunately the end was pretty blunderous as well. See in the game viewer below:

Problem:
White to play and mate in two moves. Composed by Pieter. ten Cate, first prize in the Second International Two-move Tourney of the "Grantham Journal". Interestingly the column challenge the reader to question how the position can arise from legal moves. A book was offered as a prize for whom can give the legal moves leading to the chess problem by Pieter ten Cate.

The Brooklyn Chess Club has challenged the British Chess Club to a match by cable, 1895.
Chess match between St. David's College Lampster vs University College Aberystwyth, end with 0-8 for the later. Professor Kirby vs G.J. Thomas 0-1 and so on.

We come to know the strength of The Cambrian chess columnist James Glass in this sample of game. This game came from a match between James Glass vs M.F. Lee, which must be a strong player who able to give handicap. There also known second game , published by James Glass few months later.

The Cambrian was newspaper from Welsh, they dedicated a chess column with editor James Glass. This is their first article. The transcript said:

At the request of many chess playing friends, we have decided to supply a longfelt want by devoting each week a column to chess matters, consisting of games, problems, correspondence and other interesting features in connection with this noble game.

To arrange correspondence matches between teams selected from this against teams from other Associations, and generally to advance and promote the interests and regulation the practice of chess in the district.

The challenge cup, above referred to, has been won twice by the Swansea County Chess Club (In 1888-89 and 1889-90), and is now held by the Cardiff Chess Club. The cup must be won four times in succession to become the property of the winners.

Games:
For our first game we give an old but a noted )ne. For years it was considered to be the most orilliant game on record. Anderssen, by his victory in the great tournament of 1851, was the recognised champion of the world, and Kieseritzky was one of the leading Continental players. We jive it without notes.

Other interesting notes is a report on Blackburne first blindfold exhibition at the London Chess Club 1891. He won five , lost one and drew two.

Willem Siebenhaar vs Purnell 1-0, King's Gambit - Muzio Gambit

The Australian also has its Romantic era chess master. We found the name Siebenhaar, which strongly referred to Willem Siebenhaar who was chess activist reside in Western Australia in the 19th century. He played a club member identified as Purnell. The game was in Muzio gambit, although black was up the materials he done a grave mistake and lost. The moves given in the chess column was blurry (8..B-KB3 is hard to decipher), some moves are not understand by me but nevertheless I have constructed the game and looks ok.

A consultation game played by Rev. Chapman and Dr. Colbourne against J.H. Blackburne. Unfortunately I found the given moves cannot be continue on move 13 B-R2 .. and lead to move 17 Kt x P is a total halt. Perhaps a printing error. Reader are encouraged to help.

My reading on the descriptive notation as below:

Blackburne has a lot of documented simuls and consultation games. This is one of them documented by Welsh region newspaper. The Montgomery County Times did not give the name of their chess editor, or at least I haven't found it yet.

Problem:
Anonymous chess problem mate in two.

Report:
An interesting report about St. Petersburg organizing a tournament between Steinitz, Chigorin, Lasker, Pillsbury and Tarrasch. The report detailed the "playing fee" and remuneration condition for players. Unfortunately this 'super-GM' tournament only move on with four players, as Tarrasch uninterested to join.
